Missile Defense Agency not pursuing follow-on to SM-3 Block IIA interceptor

The Missile Defense Agency is not pursuing any follow-on capabilities to the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA interceptor the Pentagon is currently co-developing with Japan, according to agency officials. The military plans to deploy the SM-3 Block IIA to Aegis Ashore sites in Europe in 2018 as part of the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA), the United States' strategy for defending Europe from Iranian ballistic missiles using a cadre of land and sea-based systems.
