Outgoing Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh has accepted an appointment as dean of Texas A&M's Bush School of Government.

Welsh, a native Texan, will retire from the Air Force July 1, after serving four years as the top uniformed officer. He will assume his new position Aug. 15, according to a May 26 press release issued by the school.

Former President George H.W. Bush praised the appointment in the press release.

"I could not be more pleased with, or thankful for, today's announcement," Bush said. "General Welsh has demonstrated uncommon leadership and an unwavering commitment to service throughout his distinguished career. I salute our wonderful partners at Texas A&M for making the absolute best decision for our students and faculty."
