To Avoid Supplemental Requests, Bush Backs $5.7 Billion Readiness Boost

Hoping to avoid the traditional practice of supplemental appropriations requests for readiness-related expenses, the Bush administration has added $5.7 billion to the fiscal year 2002 defense budget request for "readiness and training" needs, according to documents and sources. The Air Force is slated to receive $2.2 billion, the Army $1.8 billion and the Navy $1.5 billion, according to a program budget decision signed June 22 by the Pentagon comptroller.
