DOD Wants Revamped Data Sharing With Industry on Satellite Movements

Pentagon officials are asking lawmakers to make permanent a temporary program for sharing Defense Department data on satellite flight paths with private companies and foreign governments, according to DOD's latest string of legislative proposals. The proposal would convert the Commercial and Foreign Entities (CFE) pilot program, created in the fiscal year 2004 National Defense Authorization Act, into a broad authority for the defense secretary to provide space situational awareness (SSA) data to non-U.S. government organizations.
