GAO: DOD Will Need $12 Billion more For FY-04 War Costs

The Defense Department will need another $12.3 billion on top of the $65 billion Congress has already approved for war operations in Iraq and Afghanistan during fiscal year 2004, the Government Accountability Office contends in a new report. The military services are starting to make several moves because of the looming dollar shortage, putting off until next year maintenance needed on equipment used in Operation Iraqi Freedom and cutting back on peacetime aviation training, the report states.
