Defense Secretary Robert Gates has officially invited political appointees to stay in their positions until replaced. In a Dec. 19 memo sent to senior Defense Department officials, Gates says he has "received authorization from the President-Elect's Transition team" to extend invitations to political appointees who want to stay beyond Jan. 20, Inauguration Day.
