The Navy has made a final decision to employ up to four sonar surveillance systems after weighing the operational, scientific, technical and environmental implications, according to a Federal Register notice issued this morning. The Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System Low Frequency Active (SURTASS LFA) sonar will have certain geographical restrictions and monitoring designed to reduce potential adverse effects on the marine environment, the notice reads.
