Navy uses surface action groups to train junior officers in advanced tactics

The Navy is using surface action groups in various scenarios to train junior surface warfare officers, who are just finishing their first division tour, in advanced tactics similar to the aviation community's Top Gun schoolhouse. Capt. Christopher Barnes, Surface Mine Warfare Development Center deputy commander, told reporters Jan. 17 during the annual Surface Navy Association symposium in Arlington, VA, that these events are called surface warfare advance tactical training (SWATT).
