The White House budget office has directed all department heads to draw up plans for steep spending cuts in fiscal year 2015 by preparing budget proposals that assume 5- and 10-percent reductions to planned spending levels, cuts that if applied to the Pentagon could slash military spending by as much as $54 billion.
