State Dept. Close to Verifying Libya Has Dismantled WMD Program

Libya is close to completely dismantling the nuclear and ballistic missile programs it announced it would give up last December, a State Department official told a House subcommittee today. Paula DeSutter, who heads the department's verification and compliance office, said that while no verification effort is foolproof, "we have verified with reasonable certainty that Libya has eliminated, or has set in place the elimination of all its [weapons of mass destruction] and [Missile Technology Control Regime]-class missile programs."
