UN Security Council Establishes New Monitoring System for Iraqi Disarmament

The United Nations Security Council today established a new weapons monitoring system for Iraq that could pave the way for the suspension of long-standing economic sanctions if Baghdad cooperates. Under Resolution 1284, the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) replaces the UN Special Commission on Iraq (UNSCOM).
