Defense leaders last week defended a decision by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to cut the size of the Army by 27,000 beginning in fiscal year 2015, but they made the plan sound less certain than when it was unveiled by Gates on Jan. 6. by stressing that key assumptions imposed by Army and Pentagon leaders must first be met.
