LAWMAKERS REJECT PROPOSAL TO CUT U.S. MILITARY AID TO COLOMBIA

House lawmakers last week voted against a proposal to cut $75 million from the $588 million requested by President Bush for U.S. military aid to Colombia in fiscal year 2004. In a proposed amendment to the FY-04 foreign operations bill, Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Ike Skelton (D-MO) called for the $75 million to instead be transferred to help fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
