During her confirmation hearing yesterday to be the next Air Force secretary, Barbara Barrett vowed to focus on timeliness and progress in the modernization of nuclear weapons.

Barrett was responding to a question from Sen. Debra Fischer (R-NE), who asked if the nominee agrees with the importance of ensuring the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent program is completed on time.

"I know that the GBSD is an area that, if confirmed, you’re going to be thoroughly reviewing," Fischer said. "We're seeing calls for changes to the acquisition strategy, but I would encourage you to please keep in mind the lack of margin in the current schedule as you acquaint yourself with the program."

Following Boeing's decision in July not to bid on the GBSD prime contract under the current structure of the Air Force's solicitation, some experts argued any changes to the acquisition strategy could produce delays. The new intercontinental ballistic missiles are expected to begin replacing the legacy Minuteman III fleet in the late 2020s.

"Timeliness and moving forward on modernization of our nuclear capability is among the highest priorities," Barrett told the senator.
