Applied Insight is set to announce today it has acquired Applied Technology Group and Stratus Solutions in an effort to "strengthen Applied Insight’s advanced cloud, analytics and artificial intelligence capabilities."

Eldersburg, MD-based ATG, founded in 2009, has about 80 software engineers and data specialists and works with national security agencies.

Fulton, MD-based Stratus Solutions, founded in 2008, specializes in cloud-at-scale technology and has about 100 employees, Applied Insight said.

Both deals were completed last year.

In an interview with Inside Defense this week, Gavin Long, managing partner at the Acacia Group, the investment firm that is backing Applied Insight, said the company is seeking to be able to offer the infrastructure for data all the way up to advanced analytics of that data.

The two acquisitions, he said, help AI move "up the technology stack."

Long said the company is now seeking to bolster "codifying some of that [intellectual property] around automated intelligence and machine learning."

"That will continue to inform our acquisition strategy," he said.

John Hynes, the chief executive of Applied Insight, said during the same call the leadership teams of both companies will remain and "have roles in the new structure."

Applied Insight now has about 500 employees and another roughly 100 subcontractors working on its contracts, according to Hynes.
