BAE Systems' U.S. business said today it has acquired IAP Research, an engineering company that specializes in developing and producing electromagnetic launchers, power electronics and advanced materials.

The Dayton, OH-based IAP Research has about 40 employees and has spent more than a decade as a subcontractor to BAE as it developed the electromagnetic railgun.

"The acquisition of IAP Research aligns with BAE Systems’ focus on investing in strategic growth markets such as precision and advanced weapon systems, as well as in advanced technologies and capabilities," BAE said.

BAE in 2013 received a contract from the Office of Naval Research to pursue the second phase of the electromagnetic railgun effort.
