Boeing said today Dennis Muilenburg, its chief executive, has resigned.

David Calhoun, the chairman of Boeing's board, has been named CEO and president, effective Jan. 13. Greg Smith, Boeing's CFO, will serve as interim CEO during the transition.

Calhoun will remain a member of the board, while board member Lawrence Kellner will become non-executive chairman, effective immediately.

Over the past year, Boeing has struggled to deal with the public relations fallout in the wake of two deadly crashes involving the 737 MAX aircraft.

"The Board of Directors decided that a change in leadership was necessary to restore confidence in the company moving forward as it works to repair relationships with regulators, customers, and all other stakeholders," Boeing said in its announcement.

"Under the company's new leadership, Boeing will operate with a renewed commitment to full transparency, including effective and proactive communication with the FAA, other global regulators and its customers," the company continued.
