Carter to discuss budget on Feb. 2

Defense Secretary Ash Carter will have "something to say" about the fiscal year 2017 defense budget on Feb. 2, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook.

The confirmation comes after statements that had pegged Carter's budget preview for the final week of January.

It remains unclear how much news Carter will deliver and if he will do it at the Pentagon, though a source said it would be a "speech."

Based on a congressional budget deal reached late last year, the Pentagon is expecting a base budget of $525 billion, accompanied by a $59 billion overseas contingency operations account.

The FY-17 budget, however, reflects a $17 billion shortfall between what DOD has planned on spending and what is allowed under the terms of the congressional deal.

The formal release of the Obama's administration's FY-17 budget request is scheduled for Feb. 9.
