The Senate confirmed Carlos Del Toro as Navy secretary in a vote late Saturday.

Del Toro is a retired Navy commander, businessman and the second Hispanic-American to hold the position.

Del Toro served in the Navy for 22 years and founded SBG Technology Solutions, a government contractor servicing defense programs, after retiring from the Navy.

Del Toro "understands firsthand the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing our Navy, from addressing the pacing challenge of China and modernizing our capabilities, to investing in our most valuable asset -- our people," Defense Secretary Llyod Austin said in a statement over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Hondo Geurts, the acting under secretary of the Navy and former service acquisition chief, announced his retirement last week.
