The Army has chosen Honeywell to demonstrate and fly its upgraded T55 engine on Chinook helicopters, according to a company press release.

The upgraded T55 engine is "specifically designed for next-generation military operators" and will be outfitted on a CH-47F Chinook for a demonstration at Ft. Eustis, VA, conducted by the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation and Mission Center, a June 4 Honeywell press release says.

"The demonstration will show the ease of installation and prove out the engines new compressor design that brings additional performance and reduces fuel burn," the release states.

The upgraded engine is 25% more powerful and consumes 10% less fuel than the current T55 engine and can be incorporated by modifying existing engines or with new production engines. The upgraded T55 uses the same intake, exhaust and airframe mounts as the current version, so almost no airframe changes are required.

The release also says new modifications make the next-generation engine easier to maintain with lower operating costs and increased readiness for the warfighter.

Following the demonstrations, Honeywell will complete a final qualification process for the new engine design.
