The Littoral Combat Ship Little Rock (LCS-9) will remain in Montreal, Canada, until wintry weather conditions improve and the ship is able to transit through the St. Lawrence Seaway.

"Significant weather conditions prevented the ship from departing Montreal earlier this month and icy conditions continue to intensify," according to a Navy statement. "The temperatures in Montreal and throughout the transit area have been colder than normal, and included near-record-low temperatures, which created significant and historical conditions in the late December, early January time frame."

The ship was commissioned in Buffalo, NY, last month and arrived in Montreal Dec. 24.

Keeping the ship in Montreal ensures the safety of the Little Rock and her crew, according to the Navy. This will "have limited impact on the ship's operational schedule."

Once it's able to leave Montreal, the Little Rock will continue transiting to its homeport in Mayport, FL.

"While in port, the crew of Little Rock will continue to focus on training, readiness and certifications," the statement reads.
