Defense Secretary Jim Mattis released a new National Defense Strategy in Washington today outlining the Pentagon's shift in focus from counterterrorism to "great power competition" with China and Russia.

"We will continue to prosecute the campaign against terrorists, but great power competition -- not terrorism -- is now the primary focus of U.S. national security," Mattis said in prepared remarks for a roll-out event at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.
