McConnell cancels August recess

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is canceling August recess, telling senators to remain in Washington to pass appropriations bills and vote on President Trump's nominees.

"Due to historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president's nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, August recess has been canceled," he wrote in a statement.

It is expected, however, that senators will have a "state work period" during the first full week of August before returning to Washington for the rest of the month.
