The Pentagon intends to deploy thousands more active-duty troops to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s vaccination effort.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has approved an additional 20 teams of active-duty military personnel to support FEMA’s vaccination centers around the country, bringing the total number to 4,700 troops, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby told reporters today.

Austin first approved active-duty deployments last week to assist FEMA, which has requested a total of 10,000 troops.

Kirby said the number of deployed troops could soon rise, though the Pentagon is taking a “phased approach.”
