The Navy yesterday announced a $187.5 million contract award to the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard in Pascagoula, MS to purchase long-lead items for an America-class amphibious assault ship.
The undefinitized contract includes "associated engineering and design activities" for LHA-9, in addition to the long-lead materials.
The Navy anticipates HII finishing the work by February 2024.
Unlike LHA-6 and LHA-7, which are considered Flight 0 ships, LHA-9 will have a well deck. It is the second Flight I vessel in the America class.
