President Obama has nominated former Oklahoma lawmaker Brad Carson to become the next under secretary of the Army, according to an announcement from the White House.
Carson has been serving as the Army's general counsel since 2012. If confirmed as under secretary, he would replace Joseph Westphal, who has held the position since 2009.
Prior to becoming the Army's general counsel, Carson was a business law professor at the University of Tulsa from 2009 to 2012. He also served on active military duty in Iraq as a Navy officer embedded with the Army's 84th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Battalion from 2008 to 2009.
Carson, a Democrat, represented Oklahoma's 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2000 to 2005.
