Maj. Gen. John Morrison has been nominated to become the Army's first deputy chief of staff (G-6), a Senate committee spokeswoman confirmed today to Inside Defense.

The Senate Armed Services Committee June 24 received Morrison's nomination to become a lieutenant general, which C4ISRNET first reported was for the DCS position.

Morrison is the outgoing chief of staff for U.S. Cyber Command, a position he has held for one year. He previously served as the commanding general of Ft. Gordon and the Army's Cyber Center of Excellence.

The office will be split into separate CIO and DCS positions by Aug. 31.

As DCS, Morrison "will be the principal military advisor to the [Army] Secretary and the [Chief of Staff of the Army] on network communication issues and their effects on warfighting capabilities, and will be responsible for implementing the CIO's policies," according to a June 11 Army press release.

Current CIO/G-6 Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford will remain in his dual-hatted role until he moves onto his next assignment.

"The CIO will be the principal advisor to the [Army] Secretary on information resource management, information technology, and their effects on warfighting capabilities," the release states. "To accomplish these functions, the CIO will be the information policy creator."

No one has been nominated yet for the new CIO position, the Senate committee spokeswoman told Inside Defense.
