The Air Force on June 12 awarded Raytheon a $30.9 million contract for its first Small Diameter Bomb II low-rate initial production lot.

The contract will buy 144 bombs as well as containers and an array of training equipment.

The Air Force and Navy both have plans to buy the all-weather munition -- a combined total of 17,000 bombs. Raytheon is in the midst of certifying SDB II to drop from the F-15E and the F/A-18E/F, and will begin integrating the weapon on the F-35 in 2017.
