Smith nominated to be deputy commandant for combat development, integration

Lt. Gen. Eric Smith has been tapped to become the Marine Corps' deputy commandant for combat development and integration, according to an April 9 Defense Department statement.

Smith is also nominated to become the commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command. The two billets are customarily held by the same three-star general.

Smith is currently commanding general for III Marine Expeditionary Force and commander of Marine Corps Forces Japan.

Lt. Gen. David Berger is currently the deputy commandant for combat development and integration, but was recently nominated to become the next Marine Corps commandant.
