SAN DIEGO -- The Space and Naval Warfare Center is changing the names of its East and West Coast systems centers to "Naval Information Warfare Centers," the Navy announced today.

SPAWAR chief Rear Adm. Christian Becker made the announcement to attendees at the AFCEA West conference, and the change will be effective Feb. 18.

The change will apply to SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic in Charleston, SC, and Systems Center Pacific in San Diego. Those organizations will be called Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic and Pacific, respectively.

"The intent of the name change is to recognize the importance of the information warfare mission and does not signal a change in SPAWAR's mission of identifying, developing, delivering and sustaining information warfighting capabilities," the service said in a written statement.
