President Trump has named retired Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Kellogg acting National Security Adviser following retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn's resignation late Monday night.

Flynn resigned in the wake of news reports that alleged he had misled Trump and Vice President Pence about his contacts with Russian officials during the presidential transition period.

Kellogg, a former 82nd Airborne Division commander, served in the Army from 1967 to 2003, including two tours in Vietnam.

In his resignation letter released by the White House, Flynn wrote:

In the course of my duties as the incoming National Security Advisor, I held numerous phone calls with foreign counterparts, ministers, and ambassadors. These calls were to facilitate a smooth transition and begin to build the necessary relationships between the President, his advisors and foreign leaders. Such calls are standard practice in any transition of this magnitude.

Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and Vice President, and they have accepted my apology.
