President Trump has nominated Yleem D. S. Poblete to serve as assistant secretary of state for arms control, verification and compliance.

Poblete, currently a "senior adviser" at the State Department, has also served more than 20 years on the staff of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, including as chief of staff and staff director -- the first Hispanic woman to serve in that post, according to a White House statement.

During her tenure on the committee, Poblete "was the principal staff member on initiatives to address threats posed by Iran, North Korea, and Syria," the White House statement reads. She earned a bachelor's degree from Saint Thomas University, a master's degree from the University of Miami, and a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America.
