President Trump has withdrawn his nomination of Elaine McCusker to be Pentagon comptroller, according to congressional staffers with knowledge of the matter.

It is unclear if McCusker, who was tapped for the Senate-confirmed job in November, will remain as acting Pentagon comptroller following the withdrawal of her nomination.

The Pentagon did not immediately provide comment.

News that McCusker's nomination had been withdrawn was first reported by Politico.

McCusker's nomination was called into question following reports about internal emails in which she opposed the White House decision to withhold aid from Ukraine.

The matter eventually became the grounds upon which the House impeached Trump, though he was acquitted by the Senate.

Meanwhile, the Government Accountability Office found in January that the White House Office of Management and Budget violated the law when it withheld $214 million in U.S. military aid to Ukraine over the summer, the very concern McCusker reportedly voiced in multiple emails to OMB.
