Trump says summit with North Korea is off

President Trump has sent a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un canceling the peace summit that had been scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, according to a copy of the letter released by the White House.

“I was very much looking forward to being there with you,” Trump writes. “Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting.”

A senior North Korean official this week warned of a “nuclear showdown” if diplomacy failed and dismissed recent comments from Vice President Mike Pence as “stupid.”

Trump tells Kim in the letter that the cancellation of the summit is regrettable because he felt “a wonderful dialogue was building up between you and me.”

Trump, however, keeps the door open for a possible future meeting, telling Kim “if you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write.”
