Veeam Software, which specializes in data protection, said this week it has established a federal government-focused subsidiary that will be led by a former National Security Council official.

The new unit is known as Veeam Government Solutions and is headquartered in Washington, DC.

Veeam last year hired Earl Matthews, who is leading the VGS subsidiary. Matthews previously was senior director for defense policy and strategy on the National Security Council and acting general counsel of the Army during the Trump administration.

In an interview with Inside Defense today, Matthews said the company already has about 1,200 federal customers, including all five uniformed branches of the military and the Coast Guard.

"We're able to consolidate our personnel who understand the federal space under one umbrella," he said, noting the subsidiary has about 60 employees.

The company said it has a blanket purchase agreement in place with EC America and is partnered with CACI International.

Matthews said VGS sees an opportunity to broaden its base of government customers.

"Our goal is to grow across the government," he said. "Yes, we're pretty diversified now, but we could do a lot better."
