The week ahead is packed with major events including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' first appearance on Capitol Hill since taking charge of the Pentagon, as well as several other congressional hearings and conferences featuring senior military officials.

Tuesday

The House Armed Services Committee holds a hearing on America's role in the world.

The House Armed Services personnel subcommittee holds a hearing on military social media policy.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee holds a hearing on a Defense Business Board report which purported to identify $125 billion in savings allegedly ignored by the Pentagon.

The Senate Armed Services Committee holds a hearing on U.S. policy and strategy in Europe.

The New America Foundation hosts the Future of War Conference.

Wednesday

Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford will testify before the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee about the military budget.

The House Armed Services Committee holds a hearing on hybrid warfare.

The House Armed Services readiness subcommittee holds a hearing on the state of the Air Force.

The Senate Armed Services airland subcommittee holds a hearing on Army modernization.

The State Department holds a ministerial with a coalition of nations committed to countering the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Mattis expected to attend.

McAleese Associates and Credit Suisse hold a conference on defense programs featuring lawmakers and senior military leaders.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies hosts a conference on space security.

Thursday

The House Armed Services emerging threats and capabilities subcommittee holds a hearing on Pentagon programs intended to counter weapons of mass destruction.

The Senate Armed Services Committee holds a hearing to discuss U.S. European Command.
