Senate confirms Gibson as DCMO

The Senate voted 91-7 today to confirm John Gibson as the Pentagon's next deputy chief management officer.

Gibson most recently served as president and chief executive of XCOR Aerospace.

The confirmation comes as House and Senate lawmakers are negotiating a final fiscal year 2018 defense authorization bill, which could -- if it favors the Senate's initial draft of the legislation -- establish a new chief management officer as the No. 3 Pentagon official.

During his July 18 confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Gibson said he supports recent congressional efforts to reform DOD.

"The office of the deputy chief management officer has the opportunity to play a positive role in addressing many of the business challenges of the department," he said. "The success of any ongoing reform agenda must be a priority each and every day. It is clear this committee and Congress are very focused on this issue. The most recent legislation relating to the CMO, [chief information officer] and the structure of other operational areas is another step that conveys the message that the reform agenda is a priority."
