The Navy today awarded a $46.7 million contract modification to Boeing for the fifth prototype of a large unmanned undersea vessel, bringing the total of the company's awards for the program to $274 million.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin have been in a competition to develop the Navy's Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle.

Boeing was previously awarded in February a contract for four of the possible five prototypes the Navy had stated it would procure, Inside Defense reported.

At the time, the service declined to disclose certain details about that contract because the competition was ongoing, indicating the Navy may have been negotiating a contract with Lockheed for the last XLUUV prototype. A Navy spokesman previously confirmed to Inside Defense the service had not ruled out that possibility.

Today's Defense Department contract announcement confirms the competition is finished and the cost for all five prototypes and associated support is $274 million.
