AeroVironment said today it has paid $25.7 million to acquire Pulse Aerospace, which develops small vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aircraft systems.

The total payment includes $5 million in milestone-based earn-out payments, AeroVironment said.

"Pulse recently received a multiyear contract award with a maximum value of more than $13 million from an undisclosed defense customer for its Vapor unmanned VTOL systems, spares and services," the company noted.

AeroVironment said Pulse's facility in Lawrence, KS will become the AeroVironment Innovation Center-Midwest and will focus on small VTOL unmanned aircraft and mission planning.
