Trump impeached

The House voted today to impeach President Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, ending a months-long inquiry into allegations he improperly pressured the Ukrainian government to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a political rival vying for the White House in 2020.

The historic vote in the Democrat-led House makes Trump the third U.S. commander-in-chief to ever be impeached.

The votes to impeach Trump were widely along party lines, with only a few Democrats voting against it. Not a single Republican voted to impeach.

On the first article of impeachment, which charged Trump with abuse of power, the House voted 230-197. On the second charge of obstruction, the vote was 229-198.

The president is now slated to stand trial in the Senate where he is expected to be acquitted as the Republican party holds a majority and a two-thirds vote is required for his removal.

Trump, meanwhile, has called the impeachment process a partisan “witch hunt.”
