The Pentagon today said it "condemns in the strongest possible terms" Turkey's Oct. 16 test of the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.

Turkish President Recep Erdogan confirmed the test today.

"We have been clear and unwavering in our position: an operational S-400 system is not consistent with Turkey's commitments as a U.S. and NATO Ally," said Jonathan Hoffman, the Pentagon's chief spokesman.

"We object to Turkey's testing of this system, which risks serious consequences for our security relationship," he continued. "Turkey has already been suspended from the F-35 program and the S-400 continues to be a significant barrier to progress elsewhere in the bilateral relationship."

The United States removed Turkey form the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program last year over the Erdogan administration's purchase of the S-400.
