Army receives approval to fund new block of sense-and-avoid system

The Army has received approval from service leadership to fund block 2 of its ground-based, sense-and-avoid system -- which enables unmanned aircraft systems to fly without a visual observer -- in fiscal year 2017 through 2019, according to officials spearheading the effort. Block 2 would integrate the main displays of the ground-based, sense-and-avoid system into universal ground control stations at fielded sites, which would eliminate the need for a contractor operator.
