Assad Offers Cooperation with U.S. to Halt Smuggling into Iraq

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would welcome U.S. "cooperation" on stemming the flow of arms and anti-coalition fighters through Syria that are destined for Iraq, according to Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), who recently met with Assad while on a 10-day Middle East trip. Nelson, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, met Assad Jan. 10 accompanied by newly appointed U.S. ambassador Margaret Scobey, following stops in Morocco, Egypt and Israel.
