DOD Says Reserve Equipment Shortages Rose By $5 Billion

A new Pentagon report projects fiscal year 2003 reserve component equipment shortages at more than $5 billion more than last year. While annual reserve component equipment procurements have improved the readiness of the reserves' on-hand equipment, those purchases have not kept pace with the need to recapitalize older reserve equipment and modernize existing equipment, according to the 253-page "National Guard and Reserve Equipment Report" for FY-03, completed in February.
