DOD Testers Wary Of Fail-Safe Design In Apache Block III Transmission

The Pentagon's latest annual testing report to Congress highlights "confidence concern" over the Army's upgraded Apache Block III helicopters due to the design of the aircraft's transmission. The helicopter, which otherwise received relatively good marks in the report, has a "single tail-rotor output pinion" that provides power for the aircraft's tail rotor, hydraulic pump and electric generator, according to the report.
