DOE Unveils $9.4 Billion Budget for Nuclear Weapons, Nonproliferation

The Bush administration is asking Congress to provide $9.4 billion for Energy Department nuclear weapons and nonproliferation programs in fiscal year 2006 -- $233 million more than the amount appropriated last year. DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration manages those programs. While NNSA funding is slated for a 2.5 percent increase, DOE's non-defense energy science and environmental efforts would be cut if lawmakers approve the administration's FY-06 budget unveiled today.
