GAO: DOD Has Serious Problems Correcting Accounting Books

The Defense Department is having serious problems reconciling its accounting ledgers for closed or canceled appropriations accounts during fiscal year 2000, the General Accounting Office has found. According to a GAO report released today, Congress in 1990 changed the law governing the use of appropriations accounts because it determined that controls over them were not working.
