House Appropriators Say Price Tag, Lack of Requirement Doomed Discoverer II Satellite

The House Appropriations defense subcommittee wants to kill the Discoverer II satellite program because there is no firm requirement for the platform and development costs could shoot well past $1 billion, according to the panel's fiscal year 2001 defense-spending bill. The subcommittee announced May 11 that it had voted to kill the program. However, the panel's report detailing the rationale for the decision has not been made public.
