Navy Promises High-Level Scrutiny of Sonar Use in Puget Sound

The Navy's top commander in the Pacific Fleet will temporarily review all requests to conduct training with active sonar in Puget Sound, acting Navy Secretary Hansford Johnson recently told Washington Gov. Gary Locke (D). Until the Navy establishes department-wide guidance on mitigating the impact of sonar on marine mammals, the U.S. Pacific Fleet commander "will review and approve the use of all active sonar for routine training and maintenance in Puget Sound," Johnson assures Locke in a July 2 letter...
