NNSA Awards Contracts To Shut Down Russian Plutonium Reactors

The Energy Department's National Nuclear Security Administration has awarded $466 million to two companies to begin shutting down the last three plutonium-production reactors in Russia, DOE announced today. Together, those reactors, two at Seversk at and one at Zheleznogorsk, have the capacity to produce enough fissile material for one nuclear weapon every day and a half, according to DOE.
